Sometimes, what you've been out there searching for forever is in your hands

Hello everyone!! I have been meaning to do one last blog post for nearly a month now, but life has been a little crazy. It has been a little over a month since my return from my semester in Spain, and I will admit that it has been the most overwhelming month of my life. I returned home to my wonderful family, and we spent most of my first days home at the ball park watching the SEC baseball tournament. We do this every year, and luckily it is a pretty low-key activity for someone as jet lagged as I was! My first weekend home included the 21st birthday celebration of my sweet friend Shelby, which was a wonderful night for all of us! I found out at the beginning of June that I had been accepted into the nursing program at UAB, which caused so many emotions that I'm not even sure I could list them all. Initially, I was struck with the reality of not returning to Charleston in the Fall. For the first two days, I smiled through the tears as people congratulated me...I truly felt that everybody except me was excited. It took me a couple of days to deal with the situation, and I am now as excited as everybody else! UAB is in the top 5% of nursing schools, so I'll be getting a great education in a city that I do love and have always considered home. Now comes the time to order books, scrubs, lab coats, and stethoscopes! So, I am back at work and back in school this summer...and I'm struggling with the following question: How does my study abroad fit into my life in America??

I want to start every sentence with "When I was in Spain..." or something similar. I am constantly reminding myself that the people around me don't necessarily want to hear about my semester 24 hours a day. I wouldn't say that I have had a lot of reverse culture shock, but I definitely noticed things when I first returned. As I walked through the Miami airport, I came upon a group of about 4 workers, who were speaking to each other...in English. I literally stopped walking and just stared at them...I couldn't believe that I could understand every word they were saying. I went and bought a real Diet Coke and a People magazine with AMERICAN DOLLARS (this blew my mind), and then I realized that I didn't know who half of the people in the magazine were. I hadn't heard of the movies they were in. I had a minor freak out about American culture, and I will say that I felt left out of some aspects of America for a little while. It is hard to relate your experience to people who ask how your semester is...whenever somebody said, "How was Spain?", I really wanted to reply with, "How long do you have?" Summing it up in a couple words is nearly impossible, so I found myself searching for the most powerfully positive word and delivering it with a huge smile. There are absolutely things and people about Granada that I miss, but there are so many good things about America too! I miss the wonderful friends I made while I was over there. I miss Nati and her amazing cooking and sweet smile. I miss being able to hop on a plane/bus/train and be in a completely different country. I definitely miss the slow-paced life of the Spainards. Even though I complained about this while I was over there, I constantly feel rushed here in America. Overall, I am thankful everyday for the amazing opportunity that turned into an adventure of a lifetime. I have been working on my scrapbook (I printed 450+ pictures....madness), and there are moments when I can't believe it all happened. I saw so many places, met so many people, and learned so much about life, Spanish, and myself. I will never forget my experiences in Europe, and I can't wait to return.

I also want to say how amazed I am at the people who read this blog! I have had so many positive comments, and I still can't believe that anybody read it! I cannot thank you enough for coming on this journey with me. It was truly a pleasure! I have even had some requests for another blog, but I'm not sure what I would write about (maybe getting rid of the weight that came as a consequence of all that good food I ate....). Thank you all for keeping up with me, praying for me, and giving me an outlet to share my experiences. It was the adventure of a lifetime, and it is safe to say that I found my "something beautiful"...turns out it isn't always so far away :)

GRACIAS! and Besos :)

All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye

Oh my gosh...my last blog post from Spain! Can you believe it?? I certainly can't...

First, I'll update you on what has been going on since I returned from my fabulous trip to Paris! Everything has slowed down and sped up simultaneously. Classes were over last Wednesday, and finals began on Thursday. So, there was more time during the day to do things, but there were infinitely more things to do. There was souvenir/present shopping to do, studying (what?), and spending as much time as possible with friends before we leave. We've been going to our favorite places for the 'last' time...so strange. Sunday, we took a day trip to Cordoba. We had all been wanting to go all semester, but simply hadn't found the time. We decided to be spontaneous and just go! There's not a whole lot to do in Cordoba, but the main attraction is the Mosque-Cathedral. I think I have learned about it in about 3 of my classes...it is very famous throughout Spain! The Great Mosque was built mostly in the 800s, so its REALLY old. During the Reconquista in the 1200's, the Christians came in and overtook the Mosque. In other cities, they would destroy these structures, but in Cordoba they decided to make it their own. So, today it is called the Mosque-Cathedral, and it has Moorish architecture but Christian decoration. It is really interesting and quite the unique look! The trip wasn't too exhausting, and it was so nice to spend one last day traveling with my friends. I think it is finally summer in Spain...it was in the 90's in Cordoba!

So, like I said earlier, this will be my last post from Spain. I just went back and read the first two entries I wrote before coming here, and it is amazing how far things have come. Four months ago, I sat in the middle of my room in Vestavia, surrounded by all my belongings while trying to pack for a semester abroad. I was absolutely terrified, excited, nervous, sad, happy, anxious...just to name a few. I remember looking out the window as I took off in Miami and thinking "Wait!! Stop!! I can't do this...This is all wrong! Get me off this plane now! I need to go home!"

Fast forward to now. I am sitting in the middle of my room in Granada, surrounded by a half-packed room of my stuff. I am, yet again, terrified, excited, nervous, sad, happy, and anxious. It honestly doesn't seem real that I will be leaving on Wednesday. Tomorrow (Tuesday) will be my last full day in Granada. I'll take my last final exam, eat my last meal of Nati's, and say my last goodbyes to the friends I have made here. I will gather my stuff and head to the airport around 5 AM Wednesday morning. I'll fly from Granada to Madrid to Miami to Birmingham...in case you were wondering, it is going to take about 21 hours for me to get home! It should be quite the adventure. Throughout all these emotions I am feeling right now, I know one thing for sure. I am so thankful. Thankful for my parents for giving me this amazing opportunity and never once complaining about costs. Thankful for my friends from the US for always being available when I needed a little slice of home. Especially Colleen and Hunter for being the best travel buddies a girl could ask for! Thankful for my wonderful friends here in Granada. The hardest part of leaving is knowing that I won't be able to see them everyday. We have bonded so much over the past four months. When your family is in another country, you rely on your friends to be your family. I can't wait for us to reunite back in the States...we don't know when, and we don't know how, but it will certainly happen.

In my first blog entry, I quoted a favorite author of mine, Donald Miller. He wrote, "Everybody has to leave. Everybody has to leave their home and come back so they can love it again for all new reasons." I am so excited to return home. I can't wait for real Diet Coke, Mexican food, real American breakfast, ENGLISH, dryers for my clothes, oh and also my family and friends. I am anxious to return. That being said, I am leaving a part of my heart in Granada. There are so many things here that I will miss. Perhaps this is a blessing in disguise though...it is strangely wonderful to have places and people to miss. I am overwhelmed with memories from this semester. Also in my first entry, I expressed my desire to find my 'something beautiful' while in Europe. It is safe to say that I have found tons. From wandering around the Royal Palace in Madrid with new friends to tossing Euros into the Trevi Fountain in Rome; from sitting by the river in Seville to attending a Real Madrid soccer game with Mom and Patrick; from hiking through the mountains of Spain to climbing to the top of Parque Guell; from flamenco shows to the Cliffs of Mohrer in Ireland; from the Mediterranean Sea to the Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh; from watching the Royal Wedding in London with 2 of my best friends in the world to laying on the beach in Cadiz with new friends; from standing at the top of the Eiffel Tower for Hunter's birthday to my last weekend in Granada....it has all been a beautiful whirlwind. Thank you all for reading along with my adventures. It has been an honor to share them with you! I can't wait to see everyone back in America!

Sending my last besos and abrazos from Spain!!

Let Them Eat Cake

Hey everyone! So much has happened since I last wrote. I recovered from my weekend at the beach by doing 2 final presentations, which both went really well. I am just glad they are over! We are all getting geared up for finals, which start this Thursday. I think it is pretty unfortunate that finals come at the same time as our last week here...too much to do, not enough time!

As I'm sure you all remember, I took my last trip of the semester last weekend to PARIS. Hunter's birthday is this week, and I wouldn't miss it for the world. Except that technically I am missing it, but I've gotta go to class sometime I suppose! I left Granada around 11 AM on Thursday morning and arrived in Paris around 7:30. Hunter was nice enough to come meet me at the airport, which I really appreciated. This meeting went much smoother than the one in London! We hopped on the metro (the first of many times) and headed back to his dorm. On the way, we stopped at Mezzo di Pasta. If any of you ever go to Paris, remember this: You MUST eat at Mezzo di Pasta. This was the beginning of one of the best eating weekends I have had. We arrived at his dorm and had a small feeding frenzy on our pasta. That night, we went to Mix Club, which was an absolute blast. They even played Shakira, so I was excited. We had so much fun, but I think we all slept very well Thursday night!

Friday morning we woke up and got ready for a busy day of sight seeing. We started at the Marais, which is the Jewish district in Paris. Most importantly, this area is home to, according to Lenny Kravitz (random I know), the best falafel place in the world. I'm going to have to 100% agree with Lenny on this one. I think I'm going to find myself craving this falafel for years to come. We left the Marais and walked toward Notre Dame. Upon arriving, we found huge tents set up. In one of my favorite moments of the trip, Hunter turned around and said to me, "Oh, it's a bread party." Tons of bakeries from around Paris were giving out free samples and making delicious baked goods under the tents. HEAVEN. We marveled at that for a while before entering the cathedral. I had seen Notre Dame before, but I had forgotten how impressive it was. I love the stained glass windows in there. We continued our walk through the city, stopping at a little bookshop called Shakespeare and Company. On top of being one of the cutest places I have ever seen, this store used to be a hangout of literary geniuses Ernest Hemingway and James Joyce. We also passed the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, the Pont d'alma (the bridge where Princess Diana's car accident took place), among countless other Parisian sights. We ended our walk at the Eiffel Tower. We had a little photo shoot and decided to come back the next day and go to the top. Friday night we ate Mexican food. I am a little obsessed with the tacos I ate. So yummy. We were exhausted, so Hunter and I decided to stay in his room, watch a movie, and eat enough cheese, crackers, and hummus for a small army. It was a wonderful evening.

Saturday was our busiest sight-seeing day. We woke up and headed out to the Palace of Versailles, which was absolutely beautiful. Everything is so golden, and the place is massive. The gardens are lovely as well, especially when the weather is good. We toured the palace for FREE (thanks, European Union visa), and then walked around the gardens for a bit. When I get super rich and come back to Europe, I'm going to rent a golf cart and go cruising through the grounds of Versailles. A girl can dream, right? This time, I just walked around and pretended to be Marie Antoinette, so that was fine, too. We jumped back on the metro (so much public transportation this weekend) and went to the Musee d'Orsay. While it is not nearly as big as the Louvre, this museum houses a ton of masterpieces by artists such as Van Gogh, Monet, Degas, Renoir, and countless others. The collection is simply ridiculous and so impressive. We decided to make our way to the Eiffel Tower, and on the way we stopped for arguably the most amazing hot chocolate in the entire world at a precious place called Angelina. I seriously think I drank a melted Hershey's bar...I don't even know what else to say about that. We waited in line to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower. We spent so much time going up, but I'm not even mad about it. The view of the city was amazing, and we arrived at the very top right at sunset. We got to the bottom just as it lit up for the night. The entire thing was something out of a fairy tale, and I'm so glad we took the time to do it. We went straight from the Tower to a place called Breakfast in America. This restaurant was created by a man from Connecticut who moved to Paris and eventually made this restaurant with all the things he missed from America. I'll just say that I had the best bacon cheeseburger possibly of my life and that I've never been happier to drink a Budweiser. After a long day, we got back to Hunter's dorm after midnight. We were exhausted but decided to go out anyways...we can sleep when we're dead, right? We went to a club called Showcase, which is located under the Alexandre III bridge. The club was very unique and very large. We had a great night, but didn't arrive back to the dorms until the sun was coming up. This is when things really started to go south...

I had a flight at about 10:30 on Sunday morning. We had decided that we needed to leave by about 7:45 or so to get me to the airport on time. You can imagine my feelings when I woke up and looked at my phone to discover it was...9:11. After running around like crazy people and a little bit of luck, we got my flight changed to later that night. We spent the rest of the day eating a delicious brunch and watching Marie Antoinette (we were inspired from our visit to Versailles). I did manage to be on time for my next flight and I also managed to successfully hang out in the Malaga bus station for somewhere near 7 hours while waiting for my bus. Not an ideal journey, but I made it home to Granada safely! A little adventure never hurt anybody, I suppose!

I absolutely LOVED my weekend in Paris. I went to Paris for a day when I was in London during high school, and to be honest I kind of hated it. Paris is a huge city and the public transportation is a little confusing if you don't know exactly what you're doing. I am so thankful for my tour guide--It was amazing to have Hunter since he knew exactly how to get places. And he speaks French, which I definitely don't. I am so satisfied with all the things I got to do this weekend, and I can officially say that I no longer hate Paris! So thanks, Hunter for an amazing weekend! And Happy Birthday!!!

So, I am back in Granada just in time for final exams and final goodbyes. I am still having extremely mixed feelings about going home, but I seem to get more and more excited to return to America every day. More on all those emotions later, though :)
Love and miss you all! Thanks for reading!

Here Comes the Sun

Hello everybody! I had a wonderful and SUNNY weekend in Cadiz, Spain. Cadiz is a beautiful beach town in Andalucia, the same province as Granada. This trip was organized by my study abroad program, which was great because I literally didn't have to plan a thing!

We left Granada Friday afternoon and arrived in Cadiz around 8 pm. We checked into our hotel...to our surprise, API had chosen a four-star hotel right on the beach for us to stay in for the weekend. After a semester of hostels and pretty non-luxurious accommodations, we were absolutely thrilled. Every semester, API puts on a farewell dinner for all of the students. Our dinner took place in Cadiz. We had a very small amount of time to change before we left our hotel, so we threw on some nice clothes and headed to the restaurant. It was so fun to travel with my friends from Granada! It had been a long time since we had been on a trip together, and we really have a good time when we travel. After our glorious dinner Friday night, we returned to our hotel and sat on the beach for a little bit. We met some hilarious Spanish boys who asked us if we were friends with Eminem...of course we said yes!

Saturday was our designated beach day. We had an amazing breakfast at our hotel and then headed out to the beach for the remainder of the day. It was a little bit chilly and cloudy, but we still managed to get some sun and even get in the ocean a little bit! That night we ventured into the city for dinner and found an adorable place with tables outside. In addition to delicious seafood, this place had the strongest mixed drinks I have ever tasted in my life. After stuffing our faces, we headed back to the hotel via a nice long walk along the beach. Cadiz was seriously like a fairy tale--everything was absolutely beautiful and there was ocean everywhere!! We spent that night in our hotel celebrating my friend Haley's 21st birthday, followed by a late-night walk on the beach. Yeah...we spent a lot of time in the sand! It was impossible to resist!

Sunday we left Cadiz around 3pm. We spent most of the morning, you guessed it, on the beach. The weather was amazing, and there were tons of people out on the beach. It reminded me of Folly Beach in Charleston on a nice weekend day! We totally caved and got McDonald's for lunch (cheeseburger in paradise?), which was delicious. There is sometimes nothing better than a taste of home in a foreign country! On our way back to Granada, we stopped and hike through an area called El Torcal. This area is full of limestone rocks from the Jurassic Age. We really felt like we were walking through that animated movie "A Land Before Time". It was a fun hike, but we were all glad to get back to our houses in Granada to shower! Sorry that I don't have much more to say about Cadiz...laying on the beach doesn't make for a great blog entry!!

Amazingly, I am coming up on my last trip of the semester. I'll be leaving on Thursday to spend the weekend in Paris celebrating Hunter's 21st birthday. I'll come back to a lot of studying and packing! I cannot believe that I only have 15 days left in Europe...but all of those feelings will have to come in another entry!
Love and miss you all!!

When You´re Happy Like a Fool, Let it Take You Over

Hello everyone!! I know you´re all anxiously awaiting my post about the Royal Wedding and my weekend in London! First, let me mention how incredibly thankful I am for the safety of my friends and family back in Alabama. I am astounded and horrified by the pictures coming out of my Sweet Home, especially in the Tuscaloosa area. I was worried sick while watching the radar in the middle of the night, and I am so blessed that everyone I know is okay. Please continue to pray for the areas and people affected by this terrible disaster. I have been so touched by the way my state has been coming together.

Now, on to more exciting things! I left for London Thursday morning. Traveling was quite the experience-taking a bus to the bus station, a bus to the bus station in Malaga, and then another bus to the airport in Malaga was exhausting enough, but then I had to take a train from Gatwick into the city followed by a metro ride to meet up with Colleen (my best friend from home, studying in London) and Hunter (my roomie from school, studying in Paris)! I used so many modes of transportation in one day! Things went pretty seamlessly until I arrived at Victoria Station in downtown London. At this point, Hunter was waiting for Colleen two metro stops away, so I decided to just go meet them rather than waiting at Victoria. This was my first mistake. It was rush hour at the busiest metro station I have ever seen. Absolute craziness. I managed to get myself to Picadilly Circus station, where I was to meet Hunter and Colleen. Right as I got off the train, my phone decided to be difficult and refused to call any number...and Hunter and Colleen were nowhere to be found. After circling the station several times and nearly throwing my phone against a wall, I swallowed my pride and decided to ask for help. The nice man who worked at the metro station had them paged (Colleen was thrilled at this news, apparently people don´t get paged in the metro that often...imagine.), but they still did not appear. At this point, I am starting to lose my cool a little bit. I´m in a foreign country with no way to contact my friends and I have literally ZERO idea where Colleen´s flat is. The nice metro man came to my rescue again by letting me use his phone (seriously he had to dial the number for me because I cannot understand international calling AT ALL) and I FINALLY located Hunter and Colleen...standing literally ten feet away from the exit of the station. I was a little frazzled but we laughed it off. I was so excited to see my friends that it didn´t even matter! We departed from the metro station and walked to Colleen´s flat, passing Trafalgar Square and the building where Colleen has classes on the way. After dropping our stuff off at the flat, we headed out to a 3-story bar/club called O´Neill´s. Upon arrival, we went up to the 3rd floor where there is a live band. One of my favorite moments of the trip happened when they played Sweet Home Alabama...there is nothing like hearing an anthem about your home state with your best friend from your home state while in a foreign country. Like I said, a wonderful moment. I´m not sure if I have ever screamed ´ROLL TIDE ROLL´ that loud ever in my life! We had so much fun at O´Neill´s.

The next morning was the big day...the Royal Wedding!!! We left Colleen´s flat pretty early so that we would be able to get to where we could see something since there were so many people. We stopped in a Starbucks for coffee and a little breakfast. As we walked along the River Thames, we were surprised that much of London seemed to be completely desserted. We were equally surprised as we approached Trafalgar Square to see it completely packed. Everyone was so excited. There were huge televisions set up in the square so that everyone could watch the ceremony and celebrations. Special shout-out here to the amazing grocery store Tesco and their unbelievable Royal Wedding specials on mini bottles of wine!! We watched the wedding amidst a crowd of thrilled English people. The energy was electric, and they were truly thrilled to have a new member of the Royal Family. Kate was a beautiful bride, and William looked so handsome...although I will admit that I am more of a Harry fan myself. Wasn´t he just precious?? Anyways, the wedding was a great experience, and I did have to shed a tear or two during it. This ended up working to our advantage. We decided to buy some souvenirs--Hunter and I got Union Jack flags with Will and Kate on them while Colleen, Caitlin, and Nick bought t-shirts. When Colleen informed the Indian man that I had cried through the ceremony, he let us have them for cheaper! Too funny. We left Trafalgar Square and found ourselves in Green Park, where we stopped to feast on some much-needed sandwiches and rest our tired legs. On the way, we managed to somehow receive another batch of drinks from a street cleaner...this was so funny and I have no idea how it really happened. We enjoyed our time in the park and then walked over to Buckingham Palace, where the reception was happening. We missed the Queen´s departure by about two minutes! We headed back to Colleen´s apartment, stopping in a few shops along the way. We spent some time relaxing at Colleen´s flat before going to Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, a very old and cute pub in London. Needless to say, we all slept very well Friday night!

Saturday was a day full of sighseeing and shopping. Well, it started with the most delicious breakfast ever at a place called Gail's. Check out the picture below. Colleen and the other Notre Dame students had a booze cruise Saturday night, and Colleen needed shoes! It was a pretty successful trip, if I do say so myself...she got some rockin´shoes. We walked around Covenant Garden and did some shopping, including the biggest Apple store in the world! Another highlight of this morning was my new obsession...CATH KIDSTON. If you´re ever looking for something to buy me, look no further: http://www.cathkidston.co.uk/. And yes, they do ship to America...just saying. Obsessed. Anyways, after we had our fill of shopping, we decided to walk around the touristy stuff in London. We saw Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's Cathedral, Shakespeare's Globe Theater, the London Eye, Big Ben, the House of Parliament, London Bridge, Millennium Bridge, Tower Bridge, and the Tower of London...it was quite the busy day! Our legs were TIRED. While Colleen and her friends got ready for their cruise, Hunter and I went to the grocery store to buy things to cook for dinner--something we really have missed since we used to do it almost every night back in Charleston. Our food was delicious, of course. After sufficiently stuffing our faces, we got ready and decided to head out to the club where Colleen had celebrated her 21st birthday a few weeks earlier. Tiger Tiger is a hilarious place complete with a light-up dance floor and the best dancing music I've ever heard in Europe. We tore up the dance floor...In the process of our night at Tiger Tiger, I lost a contact, Hunter lost and found his brand new blazer, and everyone was jealous of our moves. Things got rather interesting when we decided to walk home, even though we weren't 100% sure where home was. Hunter was only speaking in a British accent at this point, and he started just asking everyone we saw on the street where Colleen's flat was. My personal favorite was when he asked a group of Asians who were obviously tourists...and didn't speak English. Not to worry, we made it home safely and slept very well!!

Sunday was the day Hunter had to fly back to Paris. We grabbed a quick lunch and coffee before making sure he had all his stuff and putting him on the tube back to the airport. Colleen and I were really exhausted, so after he left we just hung around and enjoyed each other's company. After ordering Papa John's for dinner (delicious) we climbed in her bed and watched a movie. It was amazing to relax and spend time with one of my favorite girls that I haven't seen in a long time! We went to bed pretty early because I had to be up early Monday morning to come back to Granada.

I didn't have class on Monday because it was Labor Day in Spain. So, I spent this day traveling back from my lovely weekend in London. I used a lot of modes of transportation again and arrived back at my apartment shortly before 9:00 PM, completely exhausted. I did a little homework and went to bed!! I still don't think I have fully recovered...traveling really takes it out of me! This week I have class, and on Friday I will be leaving to spend the weekend in Cadiz, a beach town about 4 hours away. This is a trip with my study abroad program, so all of my friends will be going! I'm very excited. I will return Sunday, only to leave again on Thursday for Paris. So much traveling in the next week and a half!! It is hard to believe that I will be on a plane 3 weeks from today. I have such mixed feelings that I cannot even handle it. On one hand, I am anxious and ecstatic to be coming home to see my family and friends. On the other hand, leaving Spain will be so sad! Plus, leaving means having to take exams, pack, and be on a plane for a long time...no thank you. I'm sure these feelings will only get more intense as my departure date gets closer.

Thanks for reading!! Love and miss you all so much.

Shannon
