Castles & Cows

Hello! I know you've all been anxiously awaiting my entry about Scotland (ok, maybe not...), but before I start that, I'm going to tell you a joke that I learned from one of our tour guides in Ireland. I meant to put it in my last post but forgot!!

Ok, so there's a beer convention in town, and all of the CEOS/presidents of the beer companies decide to go out for a drink after a long day of meetings. They walk into the bar and go to order a beer. The Budweiser CEO says, "I'd love to have a 'King of Beers'...so I'll have a Budweiser, please". Next, the Coors representative goes up to the bar and says, "I love that Rocky Mountain taste...I'll take a Coors, please". The Miller guy goes up to the bar next and says, "It's Miller Time! I'll have a Miller Lite, please". Lastly, the Guinness man goes up to the bar and says, "I guess I'll just drink a soda.' Confused, the other beer employees ask him, "Aren't you going to have a beer?" The Guinness man looks back at them and says, "Well since you aren't, I won't."

Hope that made yall chuckle a little! Now, onto our journey in Scotland! We left Dublin very early (like, 4 AM early) on Tuesday to catch our 6:30 flight to Edinburgh. Everything went very smoothly (we were so lucky with transportation this week!), and we arrived at our hostel around 9 AM. We checked in, dropped off our luggage, and grabbed some breakfast. We picked out a day trip for the following day and booked it. We went on an amazing walking tour around Edinburgh, given by a guy named Mark who was from Manchester but studying in Edinburgh. During our walking tour, we saw lots of interesting things like the cathedral, Edinburgh Castle, and the former location of the tax office (where the people of Edinburgh still spit on the ground to show their spite...gross!). Edinburgh is really beautiful and has a lot of history. After our tour was over, we walked up to the Edinburgh Castle, which is located on top of a bunch of lava rock. We walked around the castle, which contains the Crown Jewels that were worn by Mary Queen of Scots. After we had gotten our fill of royalty, we moved on to the Princes Street Gardens. These gardens, situated in the valley of the castle, were absolutely beautiful! The flowers were colorful and brought an instant smile to my face. It was a little warm, so we all bought ice cream and sat by the beautiful flowers. We finally convinced ourselves to leave and walked across the city to a park that offered a beautiful panoramic view of downtown Edinburgh. We went to a pub close to the water for dinner, where I had an amazing chicken pot pie-type dish. The food in Ireland and Scotland was SO good!!

Wednesday, we went on a day trip with a company called Heart of Scotland Tours. This trip took us throughout the countryside of Scotland. Our first stop was in Stirling, a town about an hour away from Edinburgh that is known for its castle. Stirling Castle is beautiful and huge, much like Edinburgh Castle. We hung out on the castle grounds for a while and then continued on to our second stop, where I met my 3 favorite animals. Hamish, Heather, and their baby are Highland bullock cows, which are native to Scotland. They are absolutely precious! I even bought a little stuffed one because I never want to forget how adorable they were. Once we were finished with the cows, we made a quick stop for lunch and shopping (they make so much stuff with sheep wool, it is impossible to resist!). My favorite stop along the trip was at Loch Lomond. We were able to take a boat tour around the lake. The scenery was absolutely beautiful--mountains everywhere! We made one more stop where I ate the best chocolate cake of my life, and then headed back to Edinburgh. We arrived in time for dinner, and we decided to go to a nearby bar and get some sandwiches before returning to our hostel to pack up our bags.

Our flight wasn't until 4:30 on Thursday, so we spent the morning shopping and walking around Edinburgh. I loved going to all the shops and seeing the scarves, sweaters, and everything else they make with the sheep wool! I may or may not have bought some as presents! We grabbed some lunch and our luggage and headed to the airport. I was so sad to leave Scotland. I honestly wasn't prepared for how much I was going to love it! I knew I would love Ireland, but the beauty and charm of Scotland overwhelmed me as well. I really hope to return some day :)

That's all for now! It has been a rainy and chilly weekend in Granada, which has spoiled much of the Holy Week festivities...but more on that later!
Happy Easter everybody!!

Shannon

May Love & Laughter Light Your Days

Hello!! I have returned from my wonderful Spring Break trip! My journeys throughout Ireland and Scotland were truly amazing. I had such a wonderful time...so let's start from the beginning. This is going to have to be a 2-part blog, so I'll cover my time in Ireland in this entry.

I met with my travel buddies (Alison and Brittni) around 7 AM last Friday morning. We went to the bus station to go to Malaga in order to catch our flight to Dublin. This part of the trip went quite smoothly, and we made it to the airport in plenty of time (I am always worried about this...). We flew Aer Lingus, which is by far my favorite European airline. The Irish have created the best option for air travel! We arrived to Dublin after a 3 hour flight. By the time we rode the bus into the city and located our hostel, it was about 5:30 PM. After checking in to our hostel, we decided to walk around a little bit. We walked through the Viking part of town and saw Dublin Castle and the Christ Church Cathedral. We located the oldest pub in Ireland (which dates back to like 1050 or something crazy like that), where I consumed my first Guinness of the trip. The thing I discovered about Guinness is this: it really grows on you. It really is "an acquired taste"...and I definitely acquired it on this trip! After our quick stop at the pub, we went to the other side of town to walk around Trinity College. It is a beautiful campus, but there will be more on that later. At this point, we were pretty hungry so we stopped in to another Irish pub for dinner...and this is where the Fish and Chips obsession began. After some delicious food, we went back to the hostel for some much needed rest!

Saturday morning we woke up insanely early for an exciting day trip out to the Cliffs of Moher. We left Dublin around 7:40 and made our first stop at a really old church in the Irish countryside. The drive was beautiful, and I can honestly say that I have never seen anything as GREEN as the country of Ireland. Our next stop on the tour was on the coast, and we could see the islands of Ireland in the distance. After hanging out by the water for a while, we had all worked up an appetite so we proceeded to our next stop, Doolin. In Doolin, I ate some amazing fish and chips (see, told you, obsessed) and met a cool donkey. After lunch came the exciting part of the day...the Cliffs of Moher! These cliffs attract nearly a million visitors every year. The 6th Harry Potter movie was also filmed by the cliffs. Neither words nor pictures can truly describe how breathtaking this was, so you'll all have to go to Ireland to check it out for yourselves! The bus ride back to Dublin took about 4 hours (you can drive from one side of Ireland to the other in this amount of time, crazy!). When we got back, we popped into a Mexican restaurant for dinner. Chimichangas made this a perfect day in Ireland!

Sunday we had another day trip planned...to Blarney Castle! Our first stop was in the cute little town of Cobh. Cobh is right on the water, and it reminded me a lot of Charleston. Cobh was the last port of call for the Titanic, and the Lusitania sunk just outside its harbor. After Cobh, we stopped in Kildare for lunch. Kildare is another cute little town, but it doesn't have much going on except for restaurants...thankfully that's all we needed! Following our lunch, we headed to the Blarney Castle. The Castle has beautiful grounds with lots of flowers and grass...it would have been a great place for a picnic. Blarney Castle also has one of the most famous rocks in Ireland...the Blarney stone! Legend says that if you kiss this stone, you will be more eloquent for 7 years, or something like that. While this may seem to be simple (how hard can it be to kiss a stone?), nobody really warned me that you have to climb up a million steep and scary stairs and then bend over backwards to kiss it! It was kind of scary...but absolutely necessary. I can now say that I kissed the Blarney Stone!! We ate in the famous Temple Bar area Sunday night. Temple Bar is a part of town famous for having pubs with live music, so we got to listen to an Irish band play while we ate, you guessed it, fish and chips.

Monday was our last day in Dublin, so we had a lot of things planned! First, we decided to tour Trinity College. The campus is absolutely beautiful, and quite historic as well. In the Old Library at the college, you can find the Book of Kells. This is an illustrated manuscript of the Gospels and New Testament that was created by monks in about 800. The book is really old but super colorful, and the library is a very cool building as well. Once we had finished satisfying our intellectual side, we walked to the other side of town to tour the Guinness storehouse/brewery. The brewery was actually really well done--the exhibits were interesting and it was all very interactive. We really enjoyed ourselves! The Irish sure do love their Guinness. On the 7th floor of the storehouse, visitors can claim their free pint of Guinness and take in views of the city in the Gravity Bar. Of course, the best Guinness I had came straight from the Guinness brewery! After a stop at Subway (sorry but we needed a little America!) we continued indulging in the Irish culture by touring the Jameson Irish Whiskey Distillery. This was also a really interesting tour, and I was chosen, along with 7 other people on our tour, to become an official Jameson Irish Whiskey Taster! I even have a certificate to prove it. We really enjoyed our time at Jameson! Monday night we ate at a place called O'Neill's, where I had quite possibly the best and biggest fish and chips yet! Yum!

I cannot convey how much I enjoyed my time in Ireland. The people were so nice, and the country is truly a beautiful place. I was sad to leave! I am proud to say that I'm Irish after experiencing a little bit of Ireland...so much so that now I'm starting to campaign for my family to go! I really want to go back, and I just know they would love it so much. So start saving your pennies, Daddy!! :)

Alright, that's all for now...I'll add some pictures below! Look for a post about Scotland coming soon! Love and miss you all.

Shannon :)

Living the Life I Imagined

Hi everyone! I don't have a whole lot to say in this entry...but I will be taking a little bit of a hiatus due to SPRING BREAK! I can't believe it is finally here! For the entire semester, we have all been saying, "Once Spring Break hits, things are really going to go by quickly." I can already tell that this statement will be extremely true. But, before all of that, here are a few high points in my week:
-So. Much. Gelato. Claire and I seriously found the best gelato place and we cannot help ourselves. We just keep going back! They change their flavors often, so we can keep mixing it up. Today I had Berry and Chocolate...so delicious. To be fair, we've only gone twice this week...too few times if you ask me!

-Claire, Elissa, and I have to complete a project for our art history class. We decided to do our project on the San Juan de Dios (Saint John of God) church here in Granada. We've learned about it in art history but never actually seen it. We decided to go at 8 AM on Monday morning (why we decided this I will never fully understand). We walked to the church....and found that there was a mass going on. We couldn't decide how to proceed, but we eventually ended up going inside and sitting in the back. First off, the church is absolutely beautiful. Everything is gold and extravagant, and it made me feel so small to be sitting in one of the pews. We needed to take pictures, so we waited until mass was over. As soon as it finished, we started being tourists--walking around and snapping photos of all the art work. It was so cool to be a tourist in our own city for a little bit! We had a lot of time to kill before class, so we stopped in at Dunkin Coffee (aka Dunkin Donuts) for some breakfast!

- Alejandra's birthday is today! Since she is in Greece for Spring Break, we had a little celebration yesterday. Nati made her a cake and brought it during lunch. It even had candles on it that said '21'! It was such a sweet gesture...and since I'm the last one in the apartment leaving for Spring Break, I get to eat more of the cake :)

So, like I said, a pretty quiet week around here! I had a record amount of delicious tapas this week. Now I have focused my attention on packing for my trip! I leave tomorrow morning bright and early--my bus to the airport leaves at 8AM! Granada doesn't have a huge airport, so most of us end up flying out of Malaga, which is about 2 hours away. Our flight to Dublin leaves around 12:30 and should last about 3 hours. We will stay in Dublin through Tuesday, when we have a VERY early morning flight to Edinburgh, Scotland. We spend 2 days in Edinburgh and return to Granada very late Thursday evening. Next weekend should be really exciting in Granada, because they go all out for Holy Week! Good Friday and Easter are supposed to be quite the sight to see. I'm excited to have a week off of school and SO EXCITED to be going to Ireland and Scotland! It almost doesn't even seem real. I'll take lots of pictures and be sure to write all about it when I return.

Special shout-out(s) this week to my cousins Philip and Dillon...I messed up and forgot to post about Philip's big 13th birthday...welcome to the teenage years! And Dillon turns 10 this Saturday...welcome to double digits!! Can't believe how big you guys are getting!

I've added some pictures of my week below. Enjoy! Have a great week everybody!
